What is an Adult Family Home?

Adult Family Homes (AFH) are residential homes licensed by the State of Washington to care for up to 6 residents. They provide room, board, laundry, housekeeping, and necessary supervision, assistance with activities of daily living, personal care and nursing services, if necessary.

Families that own and operate Adult Family Homes are families that have opened their homes to those in need. Such a person may be the frail elderly, senior adults, or any other person with mental health needs who requires assistance.

Each and every Adult Family Home is unique in its own way, by the type of residents that it serves and the type of care that is offered. The Department of Social and Health Services inspects Adult Family Homes yearly, so there is strict compliance to regulations.

The requirements on the owners, providers and caregivers includes at a minimum, Home Care Aide, Nurse Delegation, Specialty Training in Dementia and Mental Health, CPR and First Aid Training, and 12 hours of Continuing Education each year.

Visit the home and inquire about the atmosphere, style of home, and activities to ensure that your loved one will enjoy the setting and the company.

Costs are based on the specialized needs and level of care (determined by the initial assessment of the resident) and can be scaled up or down during the first 30 days of residency.
